Year Five

Welcome to Year 5!

Our class teachers are:

Mrs Goudy

Miss Mayes

Year 5 will have a fantastic start to their 'Groovy Greeks' topic by experiencing life as an Ancient Greek thanks to Portals to the past; they will participate in activities including problem solving, debating and learning about Greek tactics when at war. The day will conclude with an Olympic games. We look forward to finding out much more about Ancient Greeks and why they were important to us. At the end of term we will be celebrating our fabulous learning by hosting our own Ancient Greek day where we will use our expertise to teach each other children about life in Ancient Greece.

In maths this term we will be focusing on number skills, angles, shape – including perimeter and area and units of measurement. Please help your child practise their times tables on a regular basis. In English we will be covering various text types including Greek myths and developing our skills as writers. Reading continues to play an important role in our learning and we hope to broaden the children's experience of authors and genres during out ‘Book club’ time.

We will also have the opportunity to raise our aspirations for future careers when we take part in a ‘World of Work’ day. In science this term we will be learning about sound as well as our changing world. We will be making strong cross-curricular links to our topic when focusing on the lives of the Ancient Greeks.

*Year 5 will have PE every Tuesday and Wednesday (please make sure kit is named). We will also have 5 weeks of swimming lessons at the Crown Pools for which they will need: swimming costume (trunks not shorts, costume not bikini), hat (which can be purchased from the school office for £1) and a towel.
