Y1 Spring term

Topic: Castles



In English we will listen to and read a range of exciting stories about castles. We will use non-fiction texts and websites to find out about castles. Much of our writing will be linked into our castles topics and will culminate in crating our fact cards which we

will share with children from other schools at our end of topic exhibition in Christchurch Park.



In mathematics we will continue to learn about numbers, counting and place value. We will work on addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. We will be describing and sorting different shapes using mathematical vocabulary. There will be plenty of opportunities to use a range of measures to describe and compare different quantities such as length, mass, capacity/volume, time and money.


Fractions, position and telling the time. Multiplication and division. Continuing to count on and backwards from two digit numbers.



We will be doing investigations linked to change and looking further at animals and classification.



In history we will be looking at castles and change in homes over time.



Art and Design

In art we will use drawing, painting and sculpture to develop and share our ideas. We will use a wide range of art and design techniques involving colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space.


Design Technology

We will be designing and making a sword, shield and crown.



We will be learning to use our voices expressively and creatively by singing songs and speaking chants and rhymes. We will listen with concentration and understanding to a range of high-quality live and recorded music. This term we will experiment with, create, select and combine sounds.


Physical Education

We will be taking part in gymnastics and dance lessons. We will develop our movement skills, taking part in activities that allow us to extend our agility, balance and coordination.

We will perform dances using simple movement patterns.



We will be learning to identify and name some feelings and express some of our positive qualities. We will be talking about how we can manage our feelings in a

positive and effective way. We will be sharing our views and opinions and setting ourselves simple goals.


Religious Education

We will continue to learn about Christianity and will gain an insight into Judaism too. RE lessons will provide plenty of opportunities to promote an ethos of respect for others, challenge stereotypes and build understanding of other cultures and beliefs.



We will be using technology to create, organise, store, manipulate and retrieve digital content. We will gather and record data to help answer questions about the topics we are learning about. There will be a big focus this term on e-safety too.
