Curriculum Design
Striving for excellence in our curriculum
We have designed our curriculum around four key drivers which underpin all teaching and learning at The Oaks and reflect our children’s needs. Our curriculum is ambitious and broad, building on the requirements of the National Curriculum in an engaging, memorable and coherent way. We strive for children to acquire an interconnected body of knowledge as well as to become excellent learners.
Language of Learning
We strive for our children to become excellent learners through the development of the following core values and skills:
to be an independent thinker
to articulate my thoughts
to be resilient
to believe in myself
to be reflective
Reading
The development of reading is central to our curriculum. Children at The Oaks spend their first years at school learning to read, enabling them to read to learn. High quality texts are meticulously chosen to support learning and the acquisition of knowledge across the curriculum. We strive to nurture a love for reading and aim for every child to leave our school reading fluently and talking confidently about the books and authors they love.
Cultural Capital
We aim to prepare our pupils for their future. We want them to live and thrive as good people in a culturally and ethnically diverse modern Britain and equip them with the essential knowledge they need to maximise their achievements.
Oracy
We want our pupils to learn ‘through talk’ as well as to learn ‘to talk’. High quality talk is deliberately planned for in a progressive way across our curriculum, to ensure children have the opportunity to broaden their vocabulary, deepen their subject knowledge and articulate themselves well. All of these opportunities empower them to better understand themselves.
